Hail Damaged Siding - Should I Be Concerned?

Do you still have siding that was damaged in the hail storm of 2008 in Omaha, Nebraska? Some houses have yet to be fixed and that can be a problem. Keep reading to find out if this problem is something that should concern you.

During the hail storm of 2008 giant pieces of ice fell from the sky. These ice balls plummeted from the clouds at approximately 32 ft. / per second / per second until they hit the ground or another substrate. If you know anything about gravity then you will understand that ice the size of baseballs falling from the sky can be quite dangerous.

Some people experienced severe roof damage due to the massive ice / hail assault. Some people faced destroyed PVC fences that surrounded their homes. Other people lost their siding integrity and some people even lost their VINYL siding altogether.

The people with wood siding are going to notice cosmetic damage before they are going to notice the integral damage. It is easy to point out little dents and dimples that were left on the wood from the hail chunks. However, it is not so easy to see the minor water access points that the hail left in each dent. Water damage is the main factor in causing a need to have your siding assessed.

The dents from the hail storm could be and usually are covered by your insurance company. The reason the insurance company covers the dents and cosmetic damage to the siding is because the surface is now allowing water access to your home. Water will flow with gravity from the high points all the way through your wood siding, wood framing, interior electrical wiring, and interior drywall. This damage could occur right away after the hail storm or it could occur after 5-7 years.

In the long run insurance companies know that replacing a few sheets of siding now can prevent replacing everything in between the siding on the outside to the drywall and paint on the inside of your Omaha home.
